Mercedes-Maybach SUV leaked ahead of Beijing

The headline act at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show from Mercedes-Maybach has leaked online, the Ultimte Luxury concept.

Details of the concept were published on carnewschina.com and show the model in its entirety. The German brand has said the concept will show how “typical strengths of an exclusive high-end saloon and an SUV can be combined.”

Reports online also state that the concept is fully electric, powered by an 80kWh battery and four-electric motors. Power is claimed at 738bhp, while top speed it limited to 155mph.

If the name wasn"t enough, images of the cabin show that the overriding theme of concept is luxury; four indiviual leather seats, rose gold trims and a Chinese tea set in the rear can be seen.

The concept itself is unlikely to enter production but could inform the look of a Maybach SUV that has all but been confirmed for production by Mercedes. At last year"s Detroit Motor Show, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Mercedes-Benz CEO, told the press: “I’d like to say you will be seeing it, but I’ll leave it at that.”

Mercedes’ chief designer Gorden Wagoner had previously told Auto Express that Maybach, like AMG, could have its own signature models rather than base them on existing cars. A new SUV would lend itself ideally to that, allowing Wagoner and his team to produce a vehicle that he describes as epitomising “modern luxury.”

“Mercedes Maybach stands very much for modern luxury,” Wagoner told us. “Where other super-luxury competitors take a more traditional approach. The difference is that modern luxury is a bit more tasteful.”

In a separate interview with Mercedes’ Vice President for Marketing, Dr. Jens Thiemer, he told Auto Express that electrification would also make its way into the Maybach brand. “Our strategy for our sub-brand with Maybach is exactly on spot, it’s going perfectly well. It’s much more than 10,000 cars we already sold with the derivatives of the S-Class - so the product portfolio will be extended.

“We will, I call it, begin ‘EQ-ing’ our cars,” Theimer added. “We will also see electric cars from Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach, so that’s what we are thinking.

“Electrification will of course hit every car and we have to be prepared. There will come a point in time where the complete portfolio will become electrified – whether its plug-in hybrid or pure electric engines.”
